James Lobban Choral Scholarships 2026-7

Thanks to an endowment by James Lobban who was a Musical Director for the Aberdeen Bach Choir for nearly 40 years, we have annual funding for four choral scholars from 25th August 2026. These scholars can be from any of the SATB sections.

Founded in 1956, Aberdeen Bach Choir is composed of around a hundred singers from across the north east of Scotland who come together weekly to share in the joy of great choral music. We sing sacred works by Bach and composers from the Baroque period to the present day. We perform two concerts a year in December and April usually in St Machar's Cathedral and the Music Hall, often with professional soloists and orchestral accompaniment.

What are we offering?

We have annual funding for four choral scholars from 25th August 2026. These scholars can be from any of the SATB sections. The scholarships are worth £500 per annum, payable in two termly instalments of £250. In addition the scholars have free membership to the choir. For those unsuccessful in their applications for the scholarships we are pleased to offer free membership to the choir - so please do apply - you have nothing to lose!

Who can apply?

Anyone between the ages of 16-26 who aspires to a vocal career and would value the experience that we can offer as part of your personal development.

What is expected of a choral scholar?

We will expect the same from you as we do from any other member of the choir:
- regular attendance at our weekly rehearsals;
- participation in each concert.

We meet weekly in term time on a Tuesday evening (7.30-9.30pm) at Mannofield Church, Great Western Road where we rehearse the music for our next concert with expert support and coaching from our professional Musical Director, Paul Tierney and accompanist, Ben Marsden.

How do I apply?

Closing date for applications is May 31st 2026. Auditions will be held in the evening of Tuesday June 16th. Please let us know via email if you are unable to make this date and we will do our best to accommodate you. We expect to make offers no later than 31st July 2026.
