RESONANT PERFORMANCE FROM CHOIR

"St. Machar's Cathedral was packed last night for a spectacular performance by Aberdeen Bach Choir conducted by James Lobban.

It concluded with Vivaldi's Beatus Vir.  Double choir and double orchestra provided by the string players of Aberdeen Sinfonietta performed this wonderfully colourful music.  Resonant, well-projected singing by the choir and clean articulation from the strings made for a truly joyful performance.

Also for double orchestra with Bryan Dargie and Dirk van Loon on violins and Bill Linklater on cello as soloists, Vivaldi's D minor Concerto from L'Estro armonico was a stirring introduction to the choral work. However for me it was the first half of the concert that I found truly impressive.

It was devoted to choral and organ music by Buxtehude.  His sturdy harmonies and counterpoint were sung with tremendous verve and vigour by the Bach choir.  Jesu meines Lebens Leben (Jesus, Life of My Life) glowed with the richness of the singing and the three choral works contrasted splendidly with Roger Williams's refined and delicate playing of two Choral Preludes on the cathedral organ."
