Since then, Sophie has sung many more prestigious concerts such as a recital in Gozo as part of the Victoria Music Festival, Haydn's Nelson Mass with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Windsor Castle, James MacMillan's Parthenogenesis at Canterbury Cathedral for Nicholas Cleobury, Handel's Samson at St John's Smith Square for Paul Spicer, Mozart's Coronation Mass at Windsor Castle for Andrew Parrott and the London Mozart Players, Handel's Messiah with the English Chamber Orchestra at the Cadogan Hall, Bach's St John Passion for the London Mozart Players at Portsmouth Cathedral, Carl Orff's Carmina Burana at the Cadogan Hall, a concert of sacred arias with the English Chamber Orchestra in France, Mozart's Exultate Jubilate with the London Mozart Players, Berlioz's L'Enfance Du Christ for Nicholas Cleobury and the ECO at Dorchester Abbey, Mozart's Requiem at the Cadogan Hall with the ECO conducted by Leopald Hager, Mozart's Exultate Jubilate at the RCM with the RCM Sinfonietta conducted by Martin Andre, Handel's Samson at the Birmingham City Hall with the ECO and St John's Passion at St Paul's Cathedral. Sophie also performs regularly with "Cafe Mozart", based in Windsor and was recently featured on the Early Music Programme on Radio 3 singing some excerpts from their most recent cd. At the age of 15 Sophie sang Susannah from Mozart's Marriage of Figaro for her local chamber opera and since then has sung the roles of Dido from Purcells' Dido and Aeneas, Pamina from Mozart's Magic Flute, Barbarina from Mozart's Marriage of Figaro and Mabel from Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance. In her first year at the RCM Sophie was asked to sing Cathleen from Vaughan William's Riders to the Sea and in her second year, Flora from Britten's Turn of the Screw for the college's Benjamin Britten International Opera School directed by John Copley. This summer Sophie sang the role of Publio in a concert performance of the UK premier of Gluck's Clemenza di Tito at St John's Smith Square with the Classical Opera Company, the title role in Handel's Rodelinda for Opera de Bauge in France and the first London Performance of Royer's Zaide, Reine De Grenade at St John's Smith Square. This performance was reviewed in The Times with the quote, "It was the 22-year-old Sophie Bevan who most often caught the ear: a rich, clear, tuneful soprano with apparently huge reserves of power. Remember the name." Future engagements include Mozart's C Minor Mass at Rochester Cathedral with Emma Kirkby in May, Rossini's La Cenerentola (Clorinda) for Stanley Hall Opera in June and Handel's Riccardo I (Costanza) and Mozart's Don Giovanni (Zerlina) for Opera de Bauge in July/August. Sophie has won a place on the Benjamin Britten International Opera School at the RCM following this year. |
